Skinny Bwoy Records

"Him mawga ee man?" "A how yu mawga so bwoy?"
"Me say, when yu tun sideways yu disappear!"
"A how your voice so big and yu so likkle!"

When Henry "Sadiki" Buckley decided to form a label, he never thought that these comments he received as a child would become the inspiration behind the labels name. But it did! In fact he took the comments and made them the basis for the way he does business. "Yu don't afi big fi work, all you need is the right motion or in this case pro-motion."

The idea for the label was conceived some 13 years ago while Buckley was still in high school. "I always wanted my own label, and steps were taken before now to establish it, but at the end of 2002 I realized that I needed to have my own label." Buckley gathered the support of family and friends, and with their financial resources and his hard work, Skinny Bwoy Records became a reality.

At this time, the label is focusing its attention on the reggae market, but Buckley hopes to branch out to other areas in the near future. "As an artist, versatility is a key factor in my musical offerings, so as a label head, I would like to keep it the same way," says Buckley. For the moment Skinny Bwoy is staying away from the "nuff artist" mentality, in fact the label has only one artist on its roster at this time, that artist being Buckley himself. "I don't think it's wise for me to lead another artist unless I understand the market in its entirety. In addition right now we are operating on a less than shoestring budget, so we wouldn't be able to focus enough attention on another artist."

The first single from the label, "Girl's Best Friend", by Sadiki on the Slow Motion riddim, is set for release in April 2003. In setting up for their first project, the label decided to take a somewhat different approach. "We have sent promos to radio. But for the past year we have been compiling e-mail addresses of average people who listen to or have some interest in reggae. We then sent out a 30-second mp3 snippet of "Girl's Best Friend" along with Sadiki's bio and photos to each of those addresses. So, instead of having the consumer find us, we have actually entered their homes and presented our artist to them. And so far, the response has been great."

Buckley understands that the road ahead will not be easy. He feels however that with hard work and wise decision-making, the label will attain its goals.
